Musician, Cancer Survivor Sings the Praises of Angel Foundation

Born and raised in Chicago, Larry Fountain comes from a family of musicians and was encouraged to sing at a young age. Starting by singing in church, he joined his first band at age 12. He relocated to the Twin Cities in 1993, and over the years, has worked with top bands including Westside, Soul-Tight Committee, The Maxx Band, The Good Bad and the Funky, BellaDiva, Synergy, R-Factor and more.

A three-time time colon cancer survivor, Fountain first learned of Angel Foundation in 2007, when he was just beginning his cancer journey. We recently caught up with the 54-year-old R&B singer to get his perspective:

Tell us about your cancer experience and how you came to know about Angel Foundation.

I first learned of the Angel Foundation in 2007, during my one of my visits to the oncology clinic. I was sitting in the waiting room and saw a brochure about Angel. I was scared, and had no idea of what to expect on this new journey. When I read the services that Angel Foundation offered to cancer patients, I became very emotional and felt a rush of comfort and gratefulness knowing that help was available.

How has your cancer experience affected you?

My cancer experience has taught me to appreciate each day and each person I encounter. Since my diagnosis, I can say I’ve had some tough days, but I never have a bad day, because each day of life is wonderful and appreciated. I fell in love with life again, just like when I was a kid.

What has been the best aspect of Angel Foundation for you?

You guys are truly fairy god people, fighting on behalf of all people stricken with cancer. It doesn’t matter what type of cancer. I personally thank each and every one of you for being there. I am a three-time survivor, and after each bout, Angel Foundation was there to help.

What Angel Foundation activities have you been involved in?

I am a musician who sings in bands around town. Last year, I organized and performed in the first annual “Bash Cancer” Benefit Bash to raise funds for Angel Foundation and spread the word about the great mission of your work. It was held at Wilebski’s Blues Saloon. Many great bands and performers donated their talent and time. I want to continue this tradition and have started planning next one for this fall. We will be passing on more details as they become known.

How has Angel Foundation most helped you?

Angel Foundation has most helped me financially, but by helping to ease a significant part of worry in that area, Angel Foundation has helped in my overall recovery.

Anything else you’d like to share about your dealings with Angel Foundation?

Yes, I was invited to tour the office and meet my fairy God people in person and I was impressed and moved by the feeling that the Angel Foundation does EVERYTHING with cancer patients and their families in mind. I personally met and shook hands with the staff. I was humbled and grateful to meet the people who continue to fight so hard to help us.

God bless you all.
